Thank you so much for this informative article! I'm so glad you put the case forward for prepared fathers (with an emphasis on the prepared) as birth companions. As a HypnoBirthing® practitioner (and group coordinator of my local home birth group), I have been looking for a way to communicate this message to families and now have an excellent resource to point them towards. HypnoBirthing® encourages and promotes a positive relationship between the mother and the father if possible and yet fully supports the mother's choice to choose an alternative birth companion. HypnoBirthing® provides a very clear and important role for the birth companion (whether he or she is the father of the baby or not), empowering him/her with skills to fully and actively participate in the birth of the new baby. The birth companion's role is crucial as he/she supports the mother, guiding and leading her into deeper relaxation, enabling the release of endorphins, the body's own natural pain relievers. If it is possible that the birth companion is the father and he supports the mother throughout the HypnoBirthing® programme and her birthing then this provides a considerable advantage in terms of family bonding.
